Proposed Australian Restrictions Spur Interest in E Cigarettes


E cigarettes may receive a boost in popularity due to tough new marketing restrictions being considered in Australia. The Australian government has expressed strong interest in adopting packet regulations for tobacco cigarettes that would require all brand names and other marketing material to be removed from the packages consumers view in stores. Nothing would remain on the packages except government-mandated health warnings.  Tobacco producers in both the United States and Britain have vowed to challenge the law and possibly seek billions of Australian dollars in compensation, but producers of electronic cigarettes are optimistic because the restrictions would not affect the marketing on their packages since e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco products.

Market analysts are carefully watching the stocks of firms that produce electronic cigarettes as investors speculate as to whether companies such as Philip Morris and British American Tobacco may consider acquiring companies that produce smokeless cigarettes. Such a move could help insulate the tobacco industry against further restrictions or regulations on traditional cigarettes and would provide them with a more diversified product line.  In the meantime, the tobacco industry worldwide is fighting the proposed Australian restrictions, likely fearing that similar regulations could be adopted across the developing nations of Asia.
