E-cigarette Sales to Minors Banned in Clark County


Minors purchasing e-cigarettes in Clark County, Oregon are now violating a county ordinance. The ban was approved this past Monday by the county commissioners. Adults in Clark County will still be able to purchase electronic cigarettes without restriction. The commissioners considered an ordinance that would treat e cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes, banning their use in public locations. In the end, however, the commission decided to allow individual business owners to set policies on their premises.

Because they produce vapor instead of smoke, they do not lead to problems associated with secondhand smoke, making them a more healthful alternative for both the smoker and his or her relatives and co-workers.  Commissioner Tom Mielke made known his objections to wording in the ordinance that had little to do with e-cigarettes. The new laws states that secondhand smoke exposure "is known to cause cancer in humans, but Mielke contended that the scientific data is not yet definitive.  Mielke said he had found "conflicting statements and facts" on the issue during internet research he had conducted.
