E-Cig Survey Shows Growing Preference for Vaping

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine recently conducted a survey on the e-cig as a smoking cessation tool. What it showed was an astonishing transition from traditional smoking to vaping. Whether electric cigarette use is safer than smoking is still a hotly debated issue, but at the very least, this study shows that once a smoker takes electronic cigarettes for a test drive, they do not smoke as much, and many will quit outright.

Electronic Cigarette Survey Method and Results

In 2010, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine conducted an online survey over the space of two weeks to determine users' vaping habits and if they would be effective as a smoking-cessation aid.

The results showed that 31 % of respondents had a six-month or greater period of smoking abstinence. Of these, 34.3% were not using any nicotine products whatsoever. Nearly 67% of respondents reported smoking less than before. Over 48% reported a period of smoking abstinence while vaping. Among the respondents who were vaping more than 20 times a day, 70% claimed to have quit smoking.

Is E-Cig Use Replacing Smoking?

Determining if vaping is a safe alternative to smoking is up to scientists, and this article makes no such claims. What can be said about the evidence is that given the choice between smoking and vaping, the trend is beginning to lean towards vapor cigarettes. Most smokers are all too aware of the health risks in smoking, but until relatively recently, none of the alternatives satisfied both the nicotine cravings and the need for the smoking ritual.

Does this mean that smoking will one day give way to vaping? Only time will tell.
