The Electronic Cigarette—What It Is and Isn't The electronic cigarette has been around for several years now, yet there is a lot of confusion about what it is, what it does, and what it can and cannot do. It has been referred to as both a smoking cessation aid and a “gateway drug.” Though it contains no tobacco, it is regulated as if it is a tobacco product. Perhaps this article can clear the air a bit on this controversy.
Smokeless Cigarettes vs. “The Real Thing” The only similarities between smokeless cigarettes and traditional cigarettes is their shape and that they both deliver nicotine. You do not light the end of an e cig, and you do not get the carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and all the other toxins that traditional cigarettes deliver. You also do not get the smoker's smell, breath and cough, nor do you endanger the people around you with these unpleasant traits. Are they an effective smoking cessation device? Many people believe so, but they are currently not medically approved as such. Criticism of their efficacy based on Charlie Sheen taking a smoke break during a show after having vaped on-stage implies that many non-medically savvy people doubt their effectiveness in quitting smoking. As a counter point, it bears mentioning that Ozzy Osbourne, never the poster child for self control, quit smoking with the assistance of e-cigarettes.
The Anatomy of an Electric Cigarette The electric cigarette, while superficially resembling a traditional smoke on the outside, looks more like a home's water heater on the inside. Most of the length of the e. cig is the battery, and the so-called “cherry” is an indicator light to show that it is working. Different models may vary—the heating element may be at the end of the battery tube, or it may be contained in the e cigarette cartridges. The cartridges are the disposable reservoirs that hold the liquid that you inhale, and they visually resemble cigarette filters. To activate an electronic cigarette, all you do is puff on it. The battery then powers the indicator light and the heating element much like a water heater's heating element. This creates the vapor that you inhale. Obviously, this is strikingly different from a tube stuffed with tobacco leaves and a filter. Ultimately, the electronic cigarette is what you make it to be. You don't have to “step out” for a smoke break. You don't have to offend your friends and family with the smells and nagging cough of a cigarette habit. You will only get the nicotine you want, without all the other junk that traditional cigarettes have. What do you use e cigs for?
