The Debate over E-Cigarettes Continues E-cigarettes have become a widely known and popular alternative to traditional cigarettes over the past few years. Since their inception in early 2006, lawmakers in a number of states have considered placing bans on the seemingly non-lethal products in conjunction with the anti-smoking movement. In early 2010, the Food and Drug Administration took a case to Court with the argument that e-cigs are more of a drug delivery type of device more so than a tobacco product, due to the fact they function by heating the nicotine within the tobacco to incorporate into the vapor that is inhaled. All cases thus far, however, have had little effect on the electronic cigarette industry.
A Common Argument Against E-Cigarettes Among one of the most heavily argued aspects of e cigarettes is over the use of various flavors for the vapor that users inhale. Many critics of the e-cig argue that specific flavors such as apple pie and various fruit based flavors are marketed to entice children to try them. However, proponents of the safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes insist that these flavors are merely a benefit to help ease smokers into the transition from heavy tobacco use to the light tobacco utilized in electronic cigarettes. Regardless of the various cases and critics of the e-cigarette, the popularity of these products has continued to grow. In many states, the e-cig is not considered a cigarette under the anti-smoking laws, and is allowed for use inside places such as bars and restaurants.
