E-Cig Vaping—Smoking Alternative vs. Cessation

The e-cig industry has certainly been placed at the center of a controversy over whether it is simply an alternate nicotine source or a smoking cessation device. There are many sub-arguments over this essential issue, such as whether or not vaping should be allowed in schools, the workplace or in public buildings. An important element of this issue is what are the “health and safety benefits of smokeless cigarettes, if any?”

Electronic Cigarette Benefits Over Smoking

The first, and most obvious, benefit of using an e-cigarette is that there is no smoke, only vapor. The health risks of smoke, whether from tobacco or a burning house, are well documented. Smoke carries carbon monoxide as well as any other toxins that may be present in whatever is being burned. The tobacco in cigarettes has well over 10,000 known toxins that are delivered with every puff.

That is not to say that you are intrinsically better off inhaling vapors than smoke. There are plenty of hazardous vapors out there—gasoline, paint thinner and super glue are immediate examples. In the case of e-cigarette vapor, there is nothing toxic in amounts that are remotely of concern. You are about as likely to get cancer or emphysema from a hot shower.

Is An E-Cig An Alternative or Cessation Device?

Essential defining points of a cessation device are that it has to be approved as such by a group such as the FDA and the manufacturer has to market it as such—by suggesting the customer wean off their product. Vapor cigarettes have not been approved by the FDA as a cessation device and no manufacturer at this time is marketing them as cessation devices. In fact, there is a push to ban vaping in public places.

Does this mean that they cannot be used as cessation aides? No one is prohibited from it, any more than people are prohibited from using snuff or chewing tobacco to quit. At least with an e-cig, you don't have chunks of tobacco in your teeth or brown spit, and you will not chew up your pens to replace the act of smoking.
