Cigarette Labeling Can Affect E-Cigarette Culture
It has already happened in Australia. If the United States' FDA and other health related organizations have their way, it can happen in the US. This recent push to change cigarette labels could bring more smokers to the e-cigarette culture. But it has its opponents, and not just in the tobacco industry.
This New Label Would not Change E-Cig Labels
The cigarette branding law that passed in Australia is extremely aggressive. The cigarette packs are to be plain brown with graphic depictions of death, diseased lungs and hearts. As it stands, there will be no Camel or Marlboro labels on the packs themselves. Of course, the international tobacco companies are up in arms about this, and are seeking an appeal.
In the United States, pretty much the opposite has happened. The FDA proposed that 1/3 of the cigarette pack would be these graphic images, but the brand labels would still be able to take up the remaining 2/3 of the space. This proposal was overturned, and the FDA is pushing for an appeal.
In both cases, it is only the tobacco cigarettes that are being targeted.
This Gives Electric Cigarette Companies A Marketing Advantage
There are already signs in Australia of a migration from traditional smoking to vaping. The idea of having to look at tar-filled lungs is apparently sticking. This could also work in the United States if the FDA gets its proposed label change pushed through.
Though e-cigarette products are regulated like tobacco products, there are not any proven health risks. Also, at this juncture, it is only the tobacco cigarettes that are being affected. What this ultimately means is that a customer has a choice between looking at enforced pictures of lung clutter or looking at our own marketing brands. If Australia is any indication, that means this already booming industry will dramatically skyrocket.
