“Antifreeze” in E Cigarette Vapor—It's Not What You Think

There has been much misleading press about the presence of propylene glycol in e cigarette fluid. The opponents of this industry are declaring from the rooftops that antifreeze, such as might be in your car, are contained within the nicotine mixture. While it is true that propylene glycol is used as auto antifreeze, there is much that is not being said about the safety of this chemical or its other applications.

Propylene Glycol in Smokeless Cigarettes is Safe

First of all, let's clear the air on propylene glycol. The Food and Drug Administration in the United States has classified is as “generally recognized as safe” or GRAS as a food additive because it has severely low oral toxicity. It would take quite a large chug of this chemical for it to actually pose a health risk. Cases of human poisoning are mostly children drinking antifreeze or an intervenous injection gone bad. Consequently, at the volume that you would be ingesting when you vape, you are completely safe.

Wait—It's in E Cigarette Cartridges AND Food?

As a matter of fact, car antifreeze and the fluid in e cigarette cartridges is a very small selection of the uses of propylene glycol. It is used as a solvent for several liquid-based drugs (oral, topical and injectable). It is added to human and pet food and tobacco to keep it moist, it is in your toothpaste, mouthwash and other cosmetics. It's in smoke machines, blacklight tattoo ink, e cigarette fluid and many other things that we all put in our bodies.

On a closing note, let's completely drive the nail in the coffin of the assumption that propylene glycol=antifreeze=poison. Propylene glycol is used as a non-toxic alternative to the antifreeze you are thinking of. If it is inevitable that the antifreeze could hit water tables, they use propylene glycol. The toxic antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, and yes, it is extremely toxic.
